I need advice on FireWire hard drives

May 8, 2002

I need to buy a FireWire hard drive. The drive will be used as the main (boot) drive between a PowerMac G4 and a PowerBook G3 (Pismo).

'Dis is da plan:

When I'm working at home, I have the drive plugged into PowerMac, I boot from it, it has my home directory, development environment, projects, etc. When I have to travel somewhere to work, I unplug the drive from my PowerMac and plug it into my Pismo, and have my Pismo boot from it. This way, I keep my work environment with me when I'm on the road.

So, I need the drive to be fast, probably 5,400 RPM, otherwise it will slow the PowerMac down to a crawl. If I go 7,200 RPM it'll probably eat my PowerBook's batteries so fast I wouldn't be able to get any work done on it on a plane or in an airport.

It should be small so I can put it in my laptop bag, but that doesn't mean it has to use a 2.5" drive. It must be able to be used without an AC adaptor on the PowerBook.

If you know of a good candidate external hard drive for this scenario, please let me know! Thanks!
