Fly in style
Now this is flying in style! -- British Airways business class has a fully reclinable seat (ie: bed), personal audio/video system, laptop accomidations... etc.
Windows 2000 and QuickTime
Last night I spent hours trying to get QuickTime 4.1.2 installed properly on Windows 2000. No matter what I did, the browser plugins would not be installed, and Windows Media Player refused to give up control of those datatypes.
After much hacking, and manually copying the plugins from my machine onto this new one, I got it pretty much working.
Bastards.
International e-business
Another great article found via Faisal.com:
Sale means "dirty" in French. -- "Would you open a spiffy new storefront in downtown Yokohama, conduct business exclusively in English and accept only U.S. dollars as payment? ThatÂ’s what most e-commerce companies are doing."

An introduction to C#
An Introduction to C# -- once I allow myself to unlearn the mantras (or handcuffs) that disciplined Java programming has burdened me with, and reaffirm to myself that I am a smart programmer, or at least, was before I started programming in Java, that I can handle doing "unsafe things" without shooting myself in the foot, I see that C# is indeed a sweet language that I could do great things with.
There are numerous things I don't like about it, but then there are many things I don't like about Java and every other language too.
My hope now is that C#'s runtime and classes are ported far and wide. I like the tie-in with XML and SOAP. I don't like the tie-in with Windows.
Calvin and Hobbes
What a grand day! I found a link to the official Calvin and Hobbes web site on Faisal.com. They're reissuing the cartoons, on a daily basis, starting from 1985. *contentment*
New machine...
Oooh... ahhh. My customer (yes, customer) sent me a new computer (PIII600/256MB) to do development on, since my computer is not very beefy (P233MMX/128MB).
This is my first serious experience with Windows 2000. Everything's different! It's taking me forever to find things that I could find in NT4. To be expected, it's just a little disorienting.
Thankfully, this machine has two video cards in it so I have both of my 19" monitors plugged into it.
Now I have to install all of the software I need to be productive.
Seed Destruction
9 of the 16 seeded women have already been eliminated at Wimbledon 2000.
10 of the 16 seeded men have already been eliminated at Wimbledon 2000.
WHAT THE HELL? It's only the start of the 3rd round!
DX extends VDE
The person who did VDE is the person doing DesktopX. Check out this page for the full effect of VDE.
Eye Candy... mmm...
Wicked stuff... Stardock, one of my all time favourite companies, is working on DesktopX, which was inspired by OpenDoc, and hopes to bring similar metaphors to Windows/COM. (cf article from The Register)
Active Desktop
All this talk of DesktopX actually made me try out the "ActiveDesktop" on the new W2K box. I've put my home page and the Subhonker Filter on my desktop.
I'd never do this to my machine, I don't trust this stuff, but hey this isn't MY machine! ;-)

DynamicJava
Right now I'm very interested in embeddable script interpreters for Java. Now, I really can't wait for WebObjects 5 to come out. (WO5 will be pure Java and support Java2)
Once I can use a Java2 VM, I'll be all over DynamicJava.
ACDSee for Mac
According to MacNN, ACDSee for Mac is now available. ACD is a local Victoria shop, so I have this strange urge to buy a copy, even though I don't think I have a reason to use it, not being a graphics person.
megaCar photos
Must resist MegaCar... must not buy MegaCar. Must... not... use 150kbps connection at 150km/h.
NHL wins its case against Senators' Yashin
CNNSI.com NHL wins its case against Senators' Yashin -- Alexei Yashin tried to get out of the last year of his contract by sitting out all of last season. He wanted his contract renegotiated, didn't feel $3.6M USD was enough money to make in 1 year. An arbitrator has ruled he will not be a free agent this summer, and still owes the Sens another year of work. DUH!
That's a small step for fans, a giant leap for fankind!
Now, I hope the Senators make that greedy fucker sit ANOTHER season under suspension.
Opera 4.0
This sentence is being posted from Opera 4.0. So far, I hate it. What kind of stupid browser imposes a MDI* on the user?
Ooh, I just found a nice thing -- user stylesheets. That, i like. Hmm, it does e-mail and news too.
But MDI? Argh!
I have two monitors on this computer, and I have a virtual desktop utility that gives me effectively 12 desktops, each at 1280x1024 resolution. Why would I want all of my browser windows STUCK in one of those 12 desktops?
Please tell me I can turn off MDI somehow.
* MDI = Multiple Document Interface, AKA -- all the document windows are being held hostage by the application's window.
