MS says no to FoxPro on Linux

Ed Leafe sent me this link. He's one of the best FoxPro developers in the world. I appreciate someone who continues to use a tool that doesn't see a lot of glory, simply because it's superior to the alternatives.

The Register: MS legal threat derails Foxpro on Linux demo

A developer wanted to show a fully-licensed copy of Visual FoxPro running on Linux via WINE, and an MS droid layeth'd the smack down in response. So far there has been no explanation for how that would be against the EULA. Sigh.

BTW, Ed's site runs on Zope. :-)

  1. I code in VFP a lot, and think it’s much better for many many jobs than either VB or Access. Microsoft has always hobbled it when it comes to marketing — not everyone in Microsoft, just the dominant culture within it.

This is sad news about trying to kill off any Linux-compatible synergy. As a developer with both OSs in house, I’d like to develop some of the same apps from both systems (as I’m able to do in Python, for example) plus I’d have a lot of potential new clients in the Linux world.

But of course this is precisely what MSFT wants to forbid, as any app which doesn’t require Windows to run is considered inimical.

The conflict of interest here is obvious: as a company, Microsoft can’t really get behind my needs and interests as a developer, out of concern that I might develop for people who don’t consume its flagship OS.
