Linksys RMA 0, Jim 0

Well, I'm still sick, and I can't sleep at all, so I decided to install the replacement router Linksys sent me.

I wanted it to get the same IP address from my ISP's DHCP server as my current one, so the first thing I did when I got into the new router's admin web site (which responded very slowly and a little flakily) was change the WAN MAC address to match the old router's. This is a built in feature so that you can make your ISP think your router is your PC or an old router.

I did that, and then went to change some other settings that I needed, like forwarding port 80 and changing the WiFi network name.

The thing caved. No amount of resets would help. Eventually, the diag light just would not go off. This new box is toast.

So now I get to call Linksys again. Fun fun fun fun fun.

accessRule.py is a PITA

Tonight is the 2nd time I've been bit in the ass by accessRule.py, which comes with Plone, which tells Zope to serve up /Plone/ at / on the Zope web server port. Turns out, using that in conjunction with VirtualHostMonster, trying to get it running behind apache using mod_rewrite is a bad mix.

Delete accessRule.py. It's bad. Bad!!!!

Softwood Talks Break Down Over (again)

Argh. How do you get the class bully to give you your lunch money back?

Little Snitch

From the makers of LaunchBar...

Objective Development: Little Snitch 1.0.2

What a great idea. It monitors outbound network connections and warns you when an application tries to connect to a remote machine. It also appears to let you create rules to deny applications from making outbound connections.

Another tuesday excuse

Cheryl, her two brothers and I have been going to UVic every Tuesday evening since fall to play squash. There have only been a few weeks where we didn't make it, including Christmas Eve and New Years Eve (although we would have gone on New Years Eve if they didn't close at 4pm).

Last week I decided to stay home because I was insanely busy at work... I worked through the evening. All week I looked forward to next Tuesday because I expected things would be closer to normal and we could go play.

So naturally, I woke up this morning with a congested nose and a sore throat. :(

The Climax of a great month

Hello, World. Rumours of my death and reincarnation as the ghost of weblogs past have been greatly exaggerated. :-) I didn't plan to, but I took a holiday from HBWT this month.

It's a fitting way to mark my first anniversary with Tyrell -- we've re-launched our web site using Plone and issued a press release announcing the availability of the Plone 1.0 installer for Mac OS X.

I'm very happy to be working on content management again. This site was borne from the inspiration derived from the community of people that worked with early CMS/site management tools (Frontier specifically) and their pioneering weblogs.

Now that the ice has been broken and there's some new content here, and the projects I was focusing on at Tyrell are launched, hopefully I'll be posting again regularly.

Thanks for your patience!

Oh, and here's a cool non-Tyrell non-Plone link.

I'm all about open source

Please report problems with OSX Plone RC2 installer

I will be building the Mac OS X installer for Plone 1.0 today. Before I do that, I'd like to hear of any experience you've had with the 1.0 RC2 installer.

If the installation succeeded, was there anything you had to change about the configuration, either of the startup script or in Plone itself, to suit it to your environment better?

If the installation failed, please send me your zopedebug.log file, it's in /Applications/Plone/PloneInstance/var.

Thank you greatly for your assistance!
