Parents ‘devastated’ by coach death

BBC News: Parents 'devastated' by coach death

"Headteacher at the school, George Maxwell, described the moment he had to tell Katherine's parents Faye and Ian of their daughter's death."

I can't think of a worse job/task than to have to tell parents their child has died. It hurts just to think of it.

Same great features. Better country.

CTV.ca: Amazon.ca debuts in Canada

'"Amazon.ca. Same great features. Better country." That, says Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, is the unofficial slogan for the new Canadian version of online retailer Amazon.com that officially launched Tuesday.'

Love the slogan! :) However, there's some controversy, because the competition is saying they're twisting the rubber arm of the law to get their foot in our door.

Personally, I love Amazon the store, it knows what I'm interested in, has good prices and is constantly improving. I think it's important for Canada to protect its culture and heritage from the American Imperialistic Media Goliath, where appropriate, but at the same time, but I don't see any problem with Amazon.ca. More competition is good, because Chapters.ca just doesn't cut it. I know that the Canadian company can do better if it puts its mind and money to it.

It looks like there's at least one weblogger working on Amazon.ca: I Love Me, vol. I

Vancouver Sun Satire

This is brilliant satire!

globalbs.com: Vancouver Scum

This satirical (I think... I hope!) quote from BC Premier Gordon Campbell is priceless:

Human rights are for losers: "I am ashamed to say that it is still acceptable, even trendy, in 2002 to hold and espouse anti-corporate views," Campbell grimaced. "To send a clear message that is no longer acceptable conduct in this province, we are changing the name of the reinstated [Human Rights] commission to the 'BC Corporate Rights Commission.'"

El-cheapo Harman Kardon speakers

Last night I picked up a set of Harman Kardon HK19.5 computer speakers. The speakers I had been using were not amplified, and the maximum volume was... well, very quiet.

They don't get a very good score on Epinions, but I think they're decent. They output 12W per speaker, and that's a lot better than most of the other el-cheapo speakers. And it has a front-mounted headphone jack, which is very handy!

FireWire is iPod’s #1 advantage

Dave Winer: "I still wish the iPod just used 802.11b or 10-Base-T to connect."

802.11b would be cool, but it's only up to 11Mbps, and that's the same speed as USB. Being wireless has other advantages, but downloading even 1 CD-worth of music @ 11Mbps is going to be a chore. Just ask owners of non-firewire MP3 players who have to use USB. 10BT is even slower, and too geeky for most people... and people only have 1 ethernet port on their computers... few have hubs. Even 100BT is much much slower than FireWire.

I think it's great that Dave's stopped smoking. Congrats! My dad stopped just like Dave did... he went into the hospital a smoker, and came out an ex-smoker. Mom didn't quit until shortly after my Grandpa died of lung cancer 5 years later. :-(

The big BOGU

The Register: Ballmer to China: 'Steal all the software you want, so long as it's ours'

"The Chinese will take MS' money all right, then make them their bitch when the Redmond well runs dry and they proudly roll out their own flavour of Linux to great nationalistic fanfare -- an accomplishment which, ironically, MS will have helped fund."

And now, appropriately...

DaveNet: B.O.G.U.

"One of the things I used to admire about Microsoft is a philosophy called BOGU, which stood for Bend Over and Grease Up. It was a reminder that they would take it up the butt for the bigger prize."

So will MS get the prize, or will they just be butt-fucked by the Chinese?
