Americans seeking refugee status in Canada
CNEWS: Dozens of Yanks seek refuge here
A reader commenting on the CANOE site said Americans shouldn't be offered refugee status because their government doesn't torture or harass their population.
Well, first of all, I think it's offensively discriminatory to not offer Americans refugee status, and secondly, the government does harass and torture their and other people. There are many people being held by the US government without charges or legal representation, and there are reports that these people are being treated inhumanely.

“Many people” is not the same thing as “U.S. citizen.” The only people who
are being held without charges or legal representation for any length of
time are non-U.S. citizens (and I believe the only people being held
without legal representation are the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay).
“Among the refugee seekers from other countries are: 11 Germans, 15
Italians, nine from the U.K., four Swedes and a Swiss.”
Thank goodness you folks are talking care of the Swedes. The last time we
granted Swedes asylum status, boatloads of them showed up trying to escape
that hellhole of a legal system. I’ve even heard of they abuse their
prisoners by threatening to take away their unemployment fund benefits.
Barbarians!
