Yahoo! News: NINE OUT OF 10 CARIBOU SUPPORT DRILLING
"The Teamsters have been huge supporters of drilling in ANWR, but Democrats treat union members like they treat the blacks."
At least three times she says that caribou endorse drilling in the ANWR. She must have done some amazing undercover caribou research to dig up that info. Go Ann Go!

They seem to be voting with their breeding habits:
“Prudhoe Bay turned out to be the largest deposit of oil ever found in
North America. Caribou frolic and play by the pipeline. In 20 years, the
caribou population has skyrocketed, from 3,000 to almost 27,100.”
Assuming that’s accurate (which is assuming a lot with Ann Coulter),
doesn’t sound like the Caribou are being pushed into extinction there.

All those who believe that the Prudhoe Bay oil pipeline is to be
credited with the explosion in Caribou population (if it’s accurate),
put up your hands…
Regardless, it goes without saying that pipelines and drilling are two
different beasts with completely different environmental outcomes.
The population change is an interesting statistic, but I’d like to know
the real reason why there are more caribou (it’s not the pipeline, and
they aren’t hanging out there so they can get jobs if the drilling
starts). Perhaps it’s a normal migratory pattern for them to shift from
region to region over the years? I don’t know. What I can see is, (if
that figure is accurate) if the drilling does/will have a negative
effect, it would be affecting over 9 time as many caribou as it would
have 20 years ago.

Again, *if* it’s accurate … it is extremely significant and really
undermines a lot of environmentalist claims about caribou and development.
The typical enviro. claim is that studies of caribou show that they avoid
development. Specifically they supposedly will not come within 3-4 km or so
of any developed structure such as a pipeline, a road, etc. From that, the
enviros. then look at how much developed structure a pipeline or drilling
will create and say there will be a large decline in the size of the
caribou herd.
This was predicted, for example, for Prudhoe Bay — the increased
structures was supposed to negatively impact the size of the caribou herd
and cause its numbers to decline.
BTW, the numbers do appear to be accurate. They appear to come from a 1998
study published in the journal “Biological Conservation”.
As for whether or not development could cause an increase in caribou, why
not? There are more deer in North America than at any time in history and
that is due precisely to development. A possible explanation for the
increase in caribou in Prudhoe Bay is that the increased human activity
harms the predators of caribou, leading to the increase.
