US troops patrolling Canadian border

CNN.com: Guard troops ordered to Canadian border

So much for the world's longest unprotected border. Sigh. It was fun while it lasted.

There was an article by the Toronto Sun's Peter Worthington a couple days ago that said Canada benefits from being so lenient when it comes to immigration laws and the other policies which have made it easy for terrorists to camp out in Canada. He said that terrorists would be insane to attack a country that's treated them so well! I tried but I couldn't find an archive link for the story. :-( I hope I got the gist of it right.

  1. Is it just me, or isn’t this the kind of thing that will have “the
    terrorists” quietly smiling?

IMO, yes and no. Yes because they want to stir things up and make us
lose our way of life. But no, emphatically, because the loose border
and Canada’s soft stance has been one of the reasons they’ve been able
to travel freely without concern. Will the guard ever leave the
border? I sure hope so. But I doubt it will for a while. :(

Hell, if Bush’s folks have their way they’ll continue to beat the
Canadian economy into submission until Canada becomes 10 new states for
the Republic. The softwood lumber dispute is just the beginning. (Can
    you say Manifest Destiny?)

I was in Canada last weekend, and on the show Counterspin, they were
actually debating integration with the USA! I couldn’t believe I was
actually seeing this debated on the CBC. That episode was being shot in
Windsor, which is right on the border with Detroit, if I’m not
mistaken. The people of Windsor are practically integrated already!
But I can tell you this, the rest of the country will not go so easily.

One question that was posed was “hey what’s so bad about being an
American?” I was glad someone stood up to that and exclaimed, “What’s
so bad about being a damn Canadian?!” The American signal is so strong
right now the Canadian identity is being drowned out.

If there was ever a resistance I’d join, that’d be it, eh. 49th or
    fight…

Anyway, this is more of a response than you were probably looking for,
but it’s all related, and I wanted to get this off my chest. :-)
