Bill Maher

(RANT mode on)

It's about time they got Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher back on the air.

When this tragedy happened, THAT was the show I wanted to watch. Not CNN, not ABC "News". But noooo, we had to watch the filtered crap for over a week before we'd be allowed to watch intelligent, free discussion.

This "war" has very little to do with terrorism

First I quote the Ayatallah, now I'm quoting Saddam Hussein. WTF?

Iraqi News Agency: Second open letter from Saddam Hussein to the peoples of the United States, Western peoples and governments

"Rather, it
is the incidence that has availed the opportunity to
launch the war, which has not been a result of the
incidence under any circumstances!"

Interesting. I came to this conclusion myself two days ago after reading this piece. This whole thing has been brewing, on both sides, for a long time.

This war, and yes... it is a war, not a "new kind of war"... has very little to do with terrorism. This war has to do with the west finally ridding themselves of Islamic extremist groups in the name of terrorism. The cold war was Democracy vs. Communism. This is Western Culture vs. Radical Islam. I'm not sure it's Christianity vs. Islam, I don't know enough about history to come to THAT big of a conclusion, but who knows (are they one and the same?).

I’m pissed off

Two nights ago I was supposed to go play billiards with a very close friend of mine, Nainesh.

I called him when I got home from work, as I said I would, to arrange the time. He told me, "I don't think I'll be going tonight, sorry."
(paraphrasing the discussion)

"Why?"
"There's some really wierd stuff going on out there now. It's not safe."
"What, you mean the terrorist stuff?"
"No, the hate crime stuff."
"Huh?"
"A friend of friends at work, an Indian, was walking in San Franscisco. A group of 6 or 7 people jumped him and stabbed him with a screwdriver".
"Oh. Fuck."

Nainesh is also of Indian descent.

via Dori: the gruesome details of the stabbing.

This is not right. He should not have to fear leaving his apartment in this country. Why are these fucking asshole bigots doing this? They're worse than the terrorists! At least the terrorists supposedly have a cause... (as if that justifies it, but nevertheless) People in America are being attacked for just looking different!

I asked him if he had ever been subjected to any racism or fear of hate crimes in Canada (we both moved from Victoria to SF around the same time). He said, "No, never".

Fuck off, bigots.

A punitive puppeteer?

A punitive puppeteer?

"So let's see: Microsoft is trying to control how customers use OEM software, trying to control when customers upgrade its products, trying to control when customers upgrade their hardware, and trying to control what customers say about Microsoft. I think I see a pattern."

It's days like this I'm thankful I have that built-in tasteless-joke filter.

URI fragment syntax

Would whoever told me that HTML fragment identifiers (aka anchors, that which appears after the # in a URI) cannot start with a number please remind me which spec says that?

I certainly remember reading it in response to that person's email, and changed my permalinks to include the word "item" in front of the number. I've also seen browsers NOT work with fragement identifiers that start with a number, so I know this isn't just a non-issue.

Update: Seth found it; it was actually a message on the Conversant support site.
