hbwt: from my friends

A new experimental feature on this site:

hbwt: from my friends

I've selected a few close friends who are signed up on this site for this new group weblog. People signed up for this weblog will see a form at the bottom of:

http://jim.roepcke.com/friends

It's the same form I see at the bottom of the main weblog (in fact I'm typing this message in this box on the friends weblog right now). Fill out the form and click "Create New Message" and your message will appear at the top of the friends weblog!

Try it out!

Gold, silver buried

Gold, silver buried in World Trade Center rubble

"11.8 metric tons of gold worth an estimated $110 million and 30.2 million ounces of silver valued at $121 million are buried in the rubble below one of the collapsed buildings in the World Trade Center"

A metric ton (I thought it was spelled tonne but it's spelled "ton" in this article) is approximately 2205 lbs.

Avs Forsberg: not going to play

Avs Forsberg: not going to play

Wow. At first I thought maybe he was scared to fly over the USA every second day but then I came to my senses and really READ the article. His body is battered and beaten (he had his spleen removed in the spring after all) and he needs to listen to what his body is telling him. Rest.

I respect Peter's decision. I wish more pro athletes would listen to their bodies. (Eric Lindros, for example)

SSSCA: Open Letter to Michael Eisner

Hey America,

Amid all the tragedy, the megacorps are trying to pull a fast one on you.

Have you read about the SSSCA yet?

Open Letter to Michael Eisner, Chairman and CEO, Walt Disney Company

About the SSSCA:

Security Systems Standards and Certification Act

"It is unlawful to manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide or otherwise traffic in any interactive digital device that does not include and utilize certified security technologies that adhere to the security systems standards adopted under section 104."

Also note cute little comments like (paraphrased) "time shifting is okay on non-premium cable channels and non-premium satellite channels." Which means, as soon as it passes, all channels except PBS will become "premium".
