RE: Blisters, running and shoes
I usually wear orthotic inner soles in my shoes. When I had really good health insurance I went to a podiatrist who told me my feet pronate a lot and orthotics would stop me wearing out shoes too quickly.
Sure enough, the ortotics have improved my walk and I don't chew through soles at a rate of knots. But they have disadvantages. I have recently gor back into running and wearing the orthotics in my running shoes gives be huge blisters on my arches. So painful it is sore to walk for a couple of days after.
So I've ditched the orthotics while running. It feels weird, because I'm so used to them, and it gives my calves hell for the first 10-15 minutes of activity. I'll probably invest in some "blister-proof" socks which cost about NZ$30 but have a money-back guarantee if you get a single blister.
What brand of shoes are you looking at getting? I can recommend Asics Motion Control type shoes. Damn good if you have dodgy legs.
BTW, I've recently written up my running experiences. See this story on my ETP site if you're interested.
