WROX is finished?

The Register: Wrox hit the rocks as Glasshaus cracks

Bummer. WROX is the publisher of the WebObjects book I contributed to in 2001. Sucks to see them die.

Back in the Dwarf

I got to scratch one item off my wish list this weekend. The Red Dwarf Series I and II pack. It's been so long since I've seen these, my favourite seasons of my favourite TV series.

My brother-in-law Shane and I watched the first series yesterday. He has seen lots of series 3-6, but never 1 or 2, so for him, this was all new stuff. :-)

Moving CMF site across platforms

One great thing about Zope is that you can move a Zope instance from one machine to another, and it just works... even if the other machine is on a different architecture or operating system. (case in point: I developed Tyrell's plone site on Mac OS X and copied it onto our Linux/Intel server... it just worked).

However, if you move between Windows and an operating system that uses forward slashes for path delimiters, like UNIX/Linux/BSD/OSX/etc, you need to make some minor edits in the CMF portal_skins configuration to change some relative paths from backslashes to forwardslashes, or vice versa.

This script from the ZopeLabs cookbooks makes that process very easy.

EOF Introduction

Apple: Enterprise Objects: Introduction

Finally, there's a clear, concise document that explains what Enterprise Objects is, how it works, and why it's a good thing. Take a look.

DiskWarrior

Update, 1:45 PM: I'm up to Step 6 now. Thanks to everyone who replied and chatted with me in AIM to let me know that things were proceeding normally. :)

My PowerMac G4 has had two kernel panics in the last two weeks. This time, after I rebooted, iChat didn't load properly (it did the 2nd time), and either did Stickies.

So I'm now rebooted into my DiskWarrior CD, and I clicked Graph. After a long while I got an error message, it couldn't graph my disk because an unexpected error occurred. (2403, -50). I couldn't find anything about this error message on the web. The documentation said if I get this i should reboot. So I did.

This time I clicked Rebuild instead of Graph. It's been on Step 5 of 11, Locating directory data, for well over an hour. Is this the step that's supposed to take so long? It's been a long time since I ran DiskWarrior so I have no idea.

RE: DiskWarrior

Finally, at 5:05 pm, the DiskWarrior directory replacement was finished and my PowerMac has booted into Jaguar.

So far so good. (knock on wood)

Marc, Jon and Paul on Zope in Europe, USA

Marc Canter had an interesting reaction to Jon Udell's reaction to Paul Everitt's realization about how mainstream Zope really has become in Europe.
