Who has been erased from the record?

On Scripting News, Dave Winer writes: "I've seen this over and over. The open source community has little respect for creativity. If I don't patent my creations, I've learned, they will erase me from the record."

I wonder if Dave could list anyone from the open source community who made a significant contribution and then been erased from the record. Or two people, so it could be described as happening "over and over"...

Linus, Alan, Eric, Richard, Guido, Larry, Brian... nobody is erasing them. Maybe Dave thinks he's a special case.

RE: Intuit Canada buys MYOB Canada???

On November 15th last year, I mentioned that MYOB Canada was bought by Intuit Canada, makers of QuickBooks.

As expected, Intuit has discontinued support for MYOB Canada for Mac, and this has left Canada without a Mac-based accounting program with payroll support. There's talk about this today on Macintouch (which doesn't have permalinks, dagnabit).

Thanks MYOB, and thanks a lot Intuit! You suck!

Tyrell: OpenNMS for Mac OS X

I am immensely proud to announce (and be the first to announce - hah!) that Tyrell Software has released OpenNMS 1.1.0 for Mac OS X!

(NMS stands for Network Management System)

We have been working on this for quite a while, and it's finally ready for public consumption. We made a slick Installer using Apple's PackageMaker and Installer which makes installation a breeze.

I'm also proud to say that we included a PreferencePane for System Preferences that lets you check the status of OpenNMS, start and stop it, configure its startup, and other conveniences. It's my first released commercial Cocoa package, and that makes me seriously giddy. :-)

To Johnie, Mark, and everyone at Tyrell that made this a reality -- bravo!

Cyan's moving out

Our 4.5 year-old daughter Cyan told us tonight that she's moving out of the house because she's upset that she is half-Chinese.

She said Mommy is Chinese, but she's only half-Chinese and that upsets her. She said that Cheryl's mom is Chinese, and her uncles are Chinese, but she isn't. That was no good. She wants to be full-Chinese like everyone else... everyone but Daddy, anyway. I told her that Daddy is German and Dutch, so she is half-Chinese, and quarter German, quarter Dutch. "I'm nothing!", she exclaimed!

She asked why doesn't Mommy live with her Mommy and Daddy, because they are Chinese and her uncles are and they all live together. (I guess she figures all the Chinese people are supposed to live in one house)

I wish I had video-taped the whole conversation, because it was priceless. :-) We tried to figure out where this all came from, and she said something about my Mom talking about her being half-Chinese. We'll have to have a little talk with Oma to find out what happened.

LOL!

RE: Royalty-free playing card images

Michaela sent me this link to a number of great old card sets that can be used in PySol. Since they're well over 100 years they should be public domain and usable in my application.

Thanks Michaela!

Saddam's amnesty is backfiring

CNN: Spark of protest flares outside Iraqi Information Ministry

Relatives of Iraqi prisoners who haven't been accounted for since Iraq's prisons were emptied by order of Saddam Hussein have begun to demonstrate. I wonder what the reaction will be when it becomes clear that those prisoners have been dead for a long, long time. Oops.
