Rafe on helma.xmlrpc:

it's amazing that code this bad has become a de facto standard for something important.

Truce or dare

eWeek: Truce or dare

"Everywhere we've run the Truce Campaign, we're seeing dramatic increases in sales," said Bob Kruger, vice president of enforcement for the BSA, in Washington. "So it's being successful."

Total Cost of Ownership

UserLand: Total Cost of Ownership

Total Cost of Ownership is Total Bullshit.

The important metric is Return On Investment (read more), and not in %, but in absolute terms, $. Just because something costs less to own doesn't mean it's going to make you or your organization more successful.

I believe you get what you pay for. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case in CMS land -- it's well known in the CMS industry that a high sticker price equals high credibility to executives, regardless of quality (few developers are tricked by this but they aren't usually the decision makers). Maybe that's why UserLand is dropping baloney figures, because their industry is so bent they have no choice but to play the game their competitors play.

Update: Jon Roeb responds on his site.

Some feedback regarding pushback

Now's a great time to mention that I really don't like the word pushback. The definition of the word pushback doesn't match the way people (mostly Dave Winer, but I've seen it spread a little) have been using it lately, and secondly, I think the word is confrontational, whereas the word I prefer to see, feedback, is much more respectful, constructive and friendly.

Pushing is rude, Feeding is mmm, mmm good. ;-)

'Code Red' Internet Worm May Hit Again Tuesday

Reuters: 'Code Red' Internet Worm May Hit Again Tuesday

"For us to have a safe Internet the public at large has to institute appropriate security measures, of downloading appropriate fixes to various products, making sure that their anti-virus software is continually updated," Dick said.

Don't be a Dick. Uninstall Windows today!

The Hunger Site

Shit, it looks like The Hunger Site and associated sites are gone. Damien says they lost their financial backing. :-(

That's very sad.

Surpise of the Century (not)

Wired: MS Amends Icon Concession

"It appears that Microsoft is backing off their much ballyhooed itty bitty teeny weeny sliver of flexibility and heading back to the rigid stance that has been slapped down by the second-highest court in the land," said AOL Time Warner vice president John Buckley.

AOL's icon can go on the XP desktop as long as the MSN one is there too. I am not surprised one bit. Something has to put MS down, or this is how it will act forever.

Speed up OS X now

Looking for a quick and painless way to speed up OS X? Open the Displays panel in System Preferences and change the colour depth from Millions to Thousands.

I noticed an immediate, very noticable and appreciated performance improvement.

IKEA instinct

I bought a few things for the living room at IKEA today, so I thought it would be appropriate to link to a page full of quotes from Fight Club.

Goodbye massive "entertainment centre" that holds our TV, stereo components, CDs, DVDs and VHS taps (and yucky knick-knacks and faux plants on the top, blech!), which needs a foot of space in front of the wall for cable access.

Hello minimalist KAXÅS stereo stand and TV stand which are much more appropriate for apartment living and don't offer nearly the footprint for accumulating knick-knacks and faux plants. And Hello space-saving JUTIS CD stand that cost a mere $14.95.

As Tyler says, versatile solutions for a modern life.

All done!

I finished assembling my new TV/stereo stands about a half-hour ago. They rock, it looks better than I hoped.

I took a picture of the old system just before dismantling. I'll try to remember to take one tomorrow morning and post them here tomorrow.

Boy Scouts Destroy Dinosaur Tracks

AP: Boy Scouts Destroy Dinosaur Tracks

How could one possibly construct a reasonable punishment for destroying something that has survived 190 million years to be destroy so dishonourably?

What a pathetic act by a pathetic trio.

A more complete story on the topic.

Talking Moose : Brand This!

Okay, I'm jumping on the bandwagon... the moose is loose and kicking ass.

Talking Moose: Brand This!

Moosey has a great rant about why CNet is going down the drain. (Yes, they suck). But Moosey missed one thing.

When I first got internet access at work in 1995 or 96, I think, I went to NEWS.COM every hour, if I could. They had great stuff there. Stories about technology. I loved it because it wasn't COMPUTERWORLD, the absolutely boring magazine that just loved to feature pictures of "IT managers" wearing their oxygen deprevation devices (ties) talking about why they were going to be spending $50 million dollars on a SAP/JDE/DB2 installation for their corporation. (yawn)

I had to have someone tell me what "IS" and "IT" meant. Everyone loved to call themselves IS, but to me, the label meant you were part of the COMPUTERWORLD tie-wearing-manager clique which I rebelled against.

But NEWS.COM, they were Tech News First. Now NEWS.COM is boring stories about earnings forecasts, earnings results, the result the earnings have had or could have on the price of megacorp X's stock price. I couldn't care less about that boring crap.

That's why I rarely read NEWS.COM anymore. (Is COMPUTERWORLD still in publication?)
